Thelma L. Stiveson, age 90, of Alliance, passed away at 8:35 a.m. Monday, January 25, 2010 at McCrea Manor.
Born July 12, 1919, in Beaver Falls, PA, to Albert M. and L. Edith (Goddard) Kelbaugh, Thelma moved to Ohio in 1927 and resided in the Alliance area since that time.
A 1937 graduate of Alliance High School and a 1938 graduate of Alliance Business College, Thelma began her professional career as office secretary at the YMCA for three years, an interviewer at the US Employment Office for two years, secretary-bookkeeper at the Star Bronze Company for seven years and retired as executive secretary after 25 years of service with Universal Co-Operative, Inc. until they moved their headquarters to Minneapolis in December of 1977. She was chairperson of the Alliance Universal Co-Operative Inc. Retirees Club for four years. From 1953 until fire destroyed the Stiveson and Lloyd Music and Appliance store in November of 1965, she also served as secretary-bookkeeper for her husband and Arthur Lloyd. Upon her husband's death in August of 1981, she became sole owner of the Alliance Typewriter and Office Supply Company which her husband purchased in 1967. In September of 1991 she sold the store to Velma Zucchero, a long-time employee and the store was later closed.
Thelma attended the Alliance Evangelical Friends Church where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School class serving as their treasurer for 14 years. She was a longstanding member of the Women's Division of the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce until she resigned upon her retirement. A past member of the Alliance Association of Secretaries, she served as their president for the 1964-1965 terms.
Survivors include her sister, Martha Marie (Lonny) Reever of York, PA; her brother, Rev. Earl M. (Ruth Arlene) Kelbaugh of Alliance; four nieces; five nephews; and several cousins.
In addition to her husband, John M. Stiveson, whom she married June 25, 1941 and who died August 13, 1981; she was preceded in death by her father in 1985; her mother in 1988; and a brother, Burton in 1997.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Alliance First Friends Church, 1307 W. State St., Alliance, Ohio with Pastor Rick Sams officiating. Friends may call from 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
