Tom, 72, died at 2:40 p.m. Dec. 16, 2010, at Aultman Hospital in Canton from complications following his heart surgery on Nov. 30.
A reporter for The Review since 1973, Tom will be remembered for his love of books, theater, classic movies, religion, music and travel, but mostly for his unwavering love and care for his wife, Cindi, who died in September.
Tom was born June 29, 1938, in New York NY, to William L. and Mary (Vild) Harper and grew up in Cleveland. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1960 and earned his Master of Divinity from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, ILL, now Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.
He served the Ecumenical United Brethren and United Methodist church from 1964 to 1972. He was pastor of a church in Marshallville in Wayne County, where he officiated several weddings, and was associate pastor at Christ United Methodist Church in Alliance.
For The Review, Tom wrote entertainment news, edited the religion page, and for 25 years wrote obituaries, before fax machines and e-mail were used to transmit information. He wrote the column Looking Around, which ran on Fridays in The Review and introduced readers to Tom's love of theater, music, opera and books, as well as to Tom and Cindi's pets, the latest being two cats named Foster and Maggie.
Tom and Cynthia Jane Davis were married on Feb. 7, 1988. They shared a love of performing arts and were both named honorary life members of Carnation City Players - Tom in 1990, and Cindi in 1991.
Tom was a member of the Rodman Public Library Board of Trustee from 1991 - 2007, was a former trustee for the Alliance Symphony Orchestra, was involved in the Carnation City Players, a member of Friends of the Library and the Alliance Concert Association, and was an active member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and his brother, William L. Harper who died Aug. 7, 1998.
