Thomas William Hazen, age 95, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born February 4, 1917, at the family farm on Snode St. He was the son of the late Oscar and Dorothy (Gautschi) Hazen.
Also preceding him in death was his loving wife of 65 years, Helen (Pauli) Hazen; and his brother, Paul Hazen.
Thomas was a graduate of Alliance High School, a 1939 graduate of Mount Union College and received a Master's degree from Kent State University. He began his teaching career at Osnaburg Local High School, and then furthered his profession at Marlboro High School before leaving for the World War II European campaign in 1942. He served with the Medical Detachment of the 2nd Battalion-141st Regiment - 36th Infantry Division - United States Army. He received a Bronze Star and earned the rank of First Lieutenant before returning home to marry his waiting bride, Helen, in 1945. Resuming his teaching career at Marlboro High School, he served fifteen years as Marlington High School's first principal, then ten years as a vocational guidance counselor before retiring in 1984. He was an active member of the Aldersgate Methodist Church.
He is survived by daughter, Cyndi (Eric) Syme; son, Rod (Lisa) Hazen; his loving grandchildren, Alicia Hazen, April (Jordan) Levien, Dana (Olivia) Hazen, Ashley (Joe) Hagan and Rachel Syme. He also deeply enjoyed his great-grandsons, Jeriah and Ebenezer Levien.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2012, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Pastor Joel Adkins officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and from 12 to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
