Thomas Elwood Syme, age 96, of Alliance passed away Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Altercare of Alliance.
He was born June 5, 1923, in Trosper, Kentucky to R. Elwood and Mary Ann (Reynolds) Syme.
Thomas was a 1942 graduate of Alliance High School. After training at Camp Crowder Missouri, Thomas served in the Unted States Army from 1943-1946 during World War II with the Signal Corps Unit in Panama Canal and Guatemala, installing and setting up communications for sending and receiving stations. He was awarded a World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon and Meritorius Unit Award serving with the 3364th Signal Service Battallion.
He was an avid amateur radio fan and had friends all over the world. His call letters were WA8JTT. Thomas also collected stamps and coins from many countries, loved history and was an amateur photographer.
Survivors include his son, Ronald T. Syme of Alliance; daughter, Barbara (William C. Jr.) Tuttle of Louisville; and grandson, Jason Nott of Los Angeles, California.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, D. Opal (Rickett) Syme.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Vicar Aaron Speakman of Israel’s Lutheran Church in Paris, OH officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
