Velma Hastings of Alliance, formerly of Marlboro, died Tuesday. She was 100. Daughter of the late Arthur and Rosa (Ruff) Wickersham, she was born May 27, 1914 in East Rochester, Columbiana County. She and her husband, the late James Hastings, resided in Marlboro after their October 1, 1934 wedding until his death in 1987.
She was active in the Marlboro Christian Church, AARP, and the Marlington Senior Citizens. She also enjoyed volunteering as a pink lady at Alliance Community Hospital.
For a number of years she was Marlboro correspondent for the Alliance Review.
Survivors include her son James (Erma) Jr. of Alliance; three grandchildren Michael (Kim) of Green, Douglas (Virginia) of Windermere, FL, and Sharon (Robert) Zurbrugg of Brimfield; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Dorothy (Donald) Cooper of Carrollton and Doris Smith of Wellsville and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by son William Alan, seven brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Edward Harnish of Marlboro Christian Church at 2:30 PM Saturday at the Cassaday-Turkle-Christian funeral home with burial at Marlboro Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Harbor Lights Hospice, 25 S.
