Vernon William "Bill" Knowles age 78 of Alliance, died at his home at 1:30 p.m. Sunday June 13, 2004.
He was born May 10, 1926 in Alliance, Ohio to Vernon H. "Bunny" and Nellie E. (Moore) Knowles. Mr. Knowles was a lifelong resident of Alliance, except from October 1991, until July, 2002 when he lived in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Bill graduated from Alliance High School, and served with the Alliance Fire Department for 32 years, with 21 of those years as a Lieutenant and Training Officer. After retiring, he worked part-time for the Ohio State Liquor Control.
In 1990, Bill received a certificate of recognition from Mayor Carr for his service to the Fire Department.
He was member of the Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio; International Association of Firefighters retired active membership, life member of the B.P.O. Elks #467, life member American Legion Post #166, life member of V.F.W. Post 1036 and Korean Conflict Veterans of America, and Buckeye State Sheriffs Association.
Bill was inducted into the Alliance Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1990, and also received the Meritorious Hall of Fame Service Award for years of bowling.
He was also a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II on the U.S. Kennebago in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He also served during the Korean War. He enjoyed bowling and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Jane (Locke) Knowles, whom he married May 22, 1981; three sisters Sally Knowles and Bob Shilling of Alliance, Linda Knowles and Bob Becker of Alliance, and Dorothy Knowles Brick of Alliance; one daughter Barbara Knowles and Bob Koch, son Michael Knowles of
Forestville, Ca., step-daughter Karen Hill and step-son Kevin Ramser, both of Las Vegas, NV; granddaughters Lisa Koch of Alliance and Michelle Teeling of Akron; step-granddaughters Kaile, Jenna and Jori Hill, of Las Vegas, NV; three great-grandsons, Quinntin, Derek and Evan Teeling; and two sisters-in-law Joyce (Charles) Tausch of Sebring, and Barbara (Phillip) Sanderson of Tucson, Az.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and several aunts and uncles, and will be missed by his dog, "Charky".
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Joe Peters officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, and one hour prior to the service. An Elks Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
