Virginia M. King, age 92, of Alliance, passed away Thursday, November 19, 2015 at her home where she was surrounded by her family.
Virginia was born January 13, 1923, in Alliance, Ohio, to John A. "Jack" and Audrey (Koch) Birch. On July 28, 1945, she married Rod V. King who passed away November 11, 2001.
She graduated in 1941 from Alliance High School as her class valedictorian and in 1944 from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio.
A registered nurse, Virginia was passionate about her field. She recalled once riding on the back of a tractor during a snow storm to get to her job in a hospital. She was a Red Cross Visiting Nurse for 20 years and Nursing Director of Alliance City Health Department for more than 35 years. She helped innumerable children while coordinating the Alliance Crippled Children's Program with the Alliance Rotary Club and Akron Children's Hospital.
While retired from the health department, Virginia was one of the founders of the Good Samaritan Health Clinic, then held at First United Presbyterian Church. She was a life-long member of the church where she also had been an elder and a deacon.
Virginia volunteered with the Alliance Senior Center, delivered Meals on Wheels along with her husband, Rod, and belonged to Quota International and St. Luke's Nurses Alumni Association.
Virginia is survived by her sons, Alan (Jane) King of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Larry King of Reynoldsburg, Ohio and Jack (Debbie) King of Wexford, Pennsylvania; her daughters, Patricia (Hal) Donaldson of Ashland, and Susan Vorshak of Alliance; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Arthur McCracken.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Cassaday Turkle Christian Funeral Home. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Akron Children's Hospital or Alliance Hospice.
