Virginia Nye Reed, age 89, of Alliance, died at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at The Welsh Home in Rocky River, Ohio.
She was born, August 3, 1919 in Elyria, Ohio, to Judge Horace and Ruby (McClure) Nye and lived in Alliance since 1946.
A graduate of Elyria High School, she received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Mount Union College in 1941 and taught at the Lorain County school system. She formerly taught American History at State Street Jr. High and worked for the Army Air Forces during World War II.
Virginia was a member of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church, Alliance Alumnae of Alpha Xi Delta, Mount Union College Women's Club, Sorosis Club, City Panhellenic Club, Congress Lake Garden Club, Alliance Woman's Club, McKinley Museum Auxiliary member, and a tutor at the Sebring Area Literacy Group.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Slaine of Fairview Park, Ohio; her son, David W. (Carolyn) Reed III of Wooster, Ohio; three grandchildren; and one great- grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David W. Reed Jr. whom she married July 13, 1943 and who died March 14, 1999; one sister and one brother.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, with Pastor Hoyte Wilhelm officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Union College Women's Club Scholarship Fund, the Virginia Reed Alpha Xi Delta Scholarship Fund, 1972 Clark Ave. Alliance, Ohio 44601, or to the donor's favorite charity.
