Walter Fred Staehli, age 85, of Alliance, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2011, at Bel-Air Care Center.
He was born March 27, 1926, in Zoarville, Ohio, to Fritz Staehli and Ida Bertha (Liehi) Staehli. A graduate of Louisville High School he was employed by the former Select Dairies and Beverly Farms and later retired as a custodian at the former Beloit Elementary School. Walter was a member of the Israel's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Paris, Ohio where he was active as an elder, sang in the church choir and served on various committees. Walter was also a member of the Robertsville Grange, enjoyed music and playing the accordion. He was known for his dry sense of humor and was proud of his Swiss heritage.
Walter was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars and was a POW in Germany.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda J. (Crawford) Staehli, of Alliance, whom he married on July 23, 1966; daughter, Cynthia Schmidt; sister, Margaret S. (Elmer) Fitzsimmons, of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; and step father, Amos Frautschy.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Israel's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Sue Rodgers officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
