Alliance

Walter R. Zingg, age 80, of Alliance, passed away on January 9, 2022.

He was born on February 5, 1941 in Alliance to Warner and Catherine (Britton) Zingg.

Walter graduated from Alliance High School and as quarterback for the Aviators led his team to be the 1958 State Champions.  He earned a full scholarship for football to Purdue University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Arts. He worked for the same employer for 46 years that started as Goodyear Aerospace and later changed to Loral Defense Systems and Lockheed Martin. Walter’s responsibilities involved production, planning and scheduling, as well as contract negotiations for programs such as Hard Mobile Launcher, Seahake Torpedo and many other defense programs. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Elks Lodge #467 in Alliance and the Alliance Senior Center. Walter enjoyed watching all levels of football and was a former Pop Warner football coach in Arizona. He led the state champions in 1980. Walter also volunteered his time to teach the children of Rockhill School in Alliance to read.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Brian (Sonya) Zingg and Michael Zingg, both of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Catherine, Eric, Olivia and Ella; siblings, Warner (Glenna) Zingg, Louise (Elmer) Weber, and Al (Patty) Zingg; sister-in-law, Jeri Koufus; special God-daughter, Jaime Anglin; several nieces and nephews. The family extends a special thanks to nieces Kris Good, Kelly Bericchea, Kristi Williams and Cindy Chehade.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother; oldest brother, Roger; and his wife, Judith Zingg whom he married on August 6, 1960 and who passed on November 27, 2020.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Alliance on January 29th at 2:00 p.m. Walter’s family will receive friends at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home Friday the 28th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Interment will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1575 Corporate Woods Parkway, Suite 150, Uniontown, Ohio 44685.
