Wilbur Couchie

Wilbur E. Couchie, age 89, of Alliance, passed away at 12:55 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010, at Alliance Community Hospital.
Born March 31, 1920 in Columbiana, Ohio, to Charles C. and Stella (Tyson) Couchie, Wilbur has resided in Alliance since 1950.
Wilbur was a 1938 graduate of Leetonia High School, received his Bachelors from Mount Union College in 1942, and his Masters from Ohio State University in the class of 1947. He was employed as a junior accountant with Lybrand, Ross Brothers and Montgomery of Cleveland from 1947 to 1950, and served as business manager at Mount Union College from 1950 to 1982.
Wilbur served in the United States Army during World War II and was a recipient of two Bronze Stars.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and served on the District Council on Ministries. He was a member of the East Ohio Foundation of the United Methodist Church. A recent recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of Copeland Oaks, he served on the Boards of Directors of Copeland Oaks, Crandall Medical Center and the Oaks Foundation. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Alliance, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity of Mount Union College, Beta Alpha Psi Honorary accounting Fraternity, and former member on boards of the American Red Cross, and the Alliance Community Hospital. He received the Mount Union College Alumni Service Award in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn (Dimit) Couchie, whom he married January 30, 1988; daughter, Jean (John A.) Burnquist of Canton; three stepsons, Jeffrey B. (Buffy) Hanna of Oxford, David J. Hanna of Akron and Bradley J. (Kim) Hanna of Macedonia; six step-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Cleckner of Columbiana; brother-in-law, Robert B. (Mary) Freshley of Wadsworth, and their daughter, Kimberly (David) Carlson of Medina; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Margaret Couchie, who died in December of 1985; brother, Glen; sister, Helen Shriver; and a son, William "Billy" Couchie.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Christ United Methodist Church, with Rev. Chris Martin officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, March 8, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Union College, 1972 Clark Ave. Alliance, Ohio, 44601, in memory of Wilbur E. Couchie.
