Wilbur J. Spalding, age 83 of Alliance, died April 3, 2005 at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born September 23, 1921 in Hanoverton, Ohio to James R. and Emma M. (Bacon) Spalding and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Spalding graduated in 1939 from Salem High School, and attended Fenn College and Ohio State University. He worked as an engineer for Alliance Manufacturing, retiring in 1984. After his retirement, he worked as a Consultant. He enjoyed solving many problems that were put before him in his work, enabling him to develop key patents throughout the course of his career.
Mr. Spalding was a member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school. He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 52 as well as past president of the Marlington Athletic Boosters. In addition he taught at Salem High School trades class in drafting for two years.
A U.S. Airforce WWII veteran, Mr. Spalding was a 1st Lt. and piloted B25's in China, serving with the 14th Air Force. He was a member of the Flying Tigers.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth V. (West) Spalding, whom he married Aug. 28, 1943; daughters, Shanna Spalding of Euclid, Ohio, and Barbara J. (Andrew) Auvil of Brecksville; sons, Robert R. and Dr. Janice L. Spalding of Poland, Ohio, Thomas H. Spalding of Durham, North Carolina, and Benjamin L. Spalding of McKinney, Texas; thirteen grandchildren: Matthew, Hanne, Christopher, Cecily, Adam, Steven, Bethany, Aubrey, Rachel, Ryan, Evan, Ian, and Faith, and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Gordon Ruggles officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
