William R. Bachman, age 78, of Alliance, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2011 at Akron City Hospital.
He was born February 13, 1933 in Akron, Ohio to William and Bertha (Burchman) Bachman and lived in the Alliance area for the past forty years.
A 1950 graduate of Central High School in Akron, Bill graduated in 1961 from Akron University with a B.A. in Education.
From 1965-1969, Bill served as Akron's 4th Ward City Councilman. He was also employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, was a real estate agent, retail credit investigator, substitute high school teacher in the Akron/Summit county area, retired after 32 years of service as the administrative training and logistics administrator for the Alliance Army National Guard Armory, and served as Alliance City Superintendent for purchasing and personnel.
Mr. Bachman retired after eleven years of service as chief deputy clerk for Stark County Clerk of Courts, Phil Giavasis, served three terms at large as Alliance City Councilman, and until April of this year, served as title courier for Stark County Clerk of Courts, Nancy Reinbold.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Bill served a total of 32 years in the Army and Army National Guard. His awards and decorations include: Korean War Service Medal and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Ohio Commendation Medal, Ohio Faithful Service Medal and Ohio Award of Merit.
Bill was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity; member of VFW Post 1036, American Legion Post 166, Korean Conflict Veterans, Alliance Democratic Club, Alliance Memorial Day Committee, Alliance Elks Lodge 467, and advisory for Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at the University of Mount Union.
He also belonged to Second Chance Society, AARP, Alliance Area Senior Center and Akron University Alumni Association.
Bill's friends would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Alliance Community Hospital, Alliance Community Care Center, McCrea Manor, and Akron City Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion during Bill's illness.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Joe Peters officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park in Akron.
