William R. Campbell, age 85, of Alliance, died at his home at 9:15 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009.
He was born March 1, 1924 in Lebanon, Va., to Roy W. and Barbara (Dye) Campbell and graduated from Lebanon High School.
Mr. Campbell was employed as a pipefitter at B & W Research and Ford Motor Company where he retired in 1986 after 23 years of service.
He was a member of the Methodist Church since 1942, and member of the DAV.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1947 in the European and Pacific Theater during World War II and was present for the invasion of Normandy. A life member of the VFW in Louisville, Bill earned two Purple Hearts during the war years.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn M. (Johnson) Campbell whom he married March 3, 1946; two daughters, Margie Ellen (David) Chick of Pasedena, Ca., Lois Jean (Daniel) Miller of Alliance; three grandchildren Robert, Sarah and Seth; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Kaleb; and one brother Harry Campbell of Baltimore, Md.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Dallas, Grady and Ira.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Dr. David Bloor officiating. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home.
Interment, with Military Honors, will be at Highland Memorial Park
