William H. "Bill" Fiegenschuh, a life-long resident of Alliance, died at his home on December 19, 2011. He was born June 19, 1922 to Karl and Sara (Franklin) Fiegenschuh.
He graduated from Alliance High School in 1940, and from Mount Union College in 1944. He served in the Navy during WWII, in the South Pacific. On returning home in 1946, he began his career as a jeweler. He joined his father and brother at Fiegenschuh Jewelers, founded by Karl Fiegenschuh, Sr. in 1919. He was a Certified Gemologist and member of the American Gem Society. He and Karl, Jr. retired and closed the store in 1993.
Throughout his life, he was extremely active in the Alliance community. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic order (Conrad Lodge No. 271) for 68 years, and was also a member of The Consistory (Valley of Canton). He was a Shriner (Tadmor Temple and Alliance Shrine Club) for 68 years. He was a long-time member of the Alliance Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Bill was very active in the Sigma Nu Fraternity and Mount Union College Alumni Council. He was a member of Questors and the American Legion (No. 166) for over 50 years. He was a former Chairman of the Stark County Mental Health Board. A life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Bill served many years on Church Council, belonged to Club 55, and was actively involved in the Building Committee when they moved from downtown to their present location.
In his later years Bill enjoyed his boyhood hobby of model trains, and continued his long tradition of community involvement through civic organizations and personal visits to grieving and ill friends.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ruth (Mani) Fiegenschuh; Son, Dr. Bill (Sandi) Fiegenschuh of Alliance; daughter Judy (Wayne) Huffman of Leland, NC; Step-daughter Nanci (Jeff) Daniher of Cincinnati; 9 grandchildren - Mike, Matt, Martha, Meredith, Clay, Ian, Megan, Sean and Erik; 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Sara; first wife and high-school sweetheart, Joanne (Reynolds) Fiegenschuh; and his brother, Karl Fiegenschuh Jr.
Family and friends may call Thursday evening December 22, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home in Alliance. A Masonic service will be held by Conrad Masonic Lodge No. 271 F&AM at 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening prior to visitation. Funeral services will be Friday, December 23 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 3295 S. Union Avenue, Alliance, with the Rev. Timothy Muse officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church, Friday, one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
