William H. Sampson, age 93 of Sebring, and formerly of Alliance, passed away at 9:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2010 at Crandall Medical Center.
He was born October 20, 1917 in Deerfield, Ohio to William H. and Lottie (Jenkins) Sampson, and resided in Alliance for 63 years.
A graduate of Deerfield High School, Mr. Sampson worked as a press operator for 41 years at Transue and Williams before retiring.
He was a member of the Deerfield Evangelical Friends Church. Bill was also a member of the American Legion Post 166 and VFW Post 1036.
A U. S. Army WWII veteran, Mr. Sampson served from Feb. 18, 1942 to Sept. 27, 1945 with Battery B, 65th Armored FA Battalion. He participated in seven major battles in Egypt - Libya, Tunisia, Sicily, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Normandy Invasion.
He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medals with seven bronze stars, one bronze arrowhead, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Carol E. (Lawrence) Sampson, whom he married Aug. 9, 1941; children, Charlotte K. (William) Wafler of Salem, William H. (Sandra) Sampson III of Orrville, Lawrence A. (Susan) Sampson of Alliance, and Lindsey J. (Pamela) Sampson of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Brenda, Karen, Cheryl, Eric, Kurt, Gail, Jill, Alysa and Tanya; and great-grandchildren, Nathan, Natalie, Jaycie, Shaylie, Carissa and Logan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald T. Sampson.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Deerfield Evangelical Friends Church with Pastor Jody Hill officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Deerfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deerfield Evangelical Friends Church, 1261 State Route 14
