William Edgar Hoover passed away peacefully on July 23, 2023, at home surrounded by loving family.
He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth Hoover, father of Julie Mailey (Fred), Jenny Hoover, Rob Hoover (Margi), Lorie Miller (Jeff), grandfather of Jessica Fluharty (Rick), Ben Miller (CheTawni), Adam Hoover (Katie), Amanda Holland (Eric), Rich Miller (Teresa), Lauren Levan (Jay,) Anne Mailey and great grandfather of Aubree and Owen Fluharty, Benton, Hunter and Nico Hoover, Stella and Oliver Holland and Juniper Miller.
Bill was born April 18, 1927 at home in Lexington Township to Laura (Hammer) and Clarence Hoover. Much of his childhood was spent on his Grandfather, Benton Hoover’s farm with his Aunt Pearl and Uncle Raymond. Bill graduated from Alliance High School in 1945.
A WWII Veteran, he served in the Air Force, 358th Aircraft Controlling Squadron at a radar station on Okinawa. Returning home, he married Ruth and managed a farm before starting his own home building business, The Country Craftsman. Ruth contributed creative interior design to the homes he built, including the three homes they built for themselves. Bill eventually built 300 homes in the Alliance area. It was his delight at the age of 70 to build a home at Fort Myers Beach, which he and Ruth enjoyed sharing with family. In his later years he loved woodworking, using fallen trees to create baskets and tables to give as gifts.
In his retirement he achieved his Great Lakes Charter Captain’s license and started a charter fishing business: Fishing for Fun. Offering expeditions on Lake Erie, he shared his lifelong passion for fishing with others. He also captained deep sea fishing excursions for grouper off Fort Myers Beach with family and friends. Remember him when you take your next fishing trip. He was and will always be our Captain.
A funeral service will be held at Science Hill Community Church on Monday, July 31st at 12:00 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior.
