William Leyda

September 16, 1917 — November 10, 2007

William E. Leyda, age 90, a longtime resident of Alliance, died at 8:15 a.m. Nov. 10, 2007 at Bel-Air Care Center following a struggle with Alzheimer's and other associated illnesses.
Born in Akron, Ohio on March 19, 1917 to Ralph and Myrl (Watson) Leyda, Bill moved to Alliance with his wife, Ruth and built his home in the woods of western Overlook Dr. with the help of his father and grandfather.
Bill worked for more than 40 years as a research metallurgist at Babcock and Wilcox Research Center. He was a recognized authority on CREEP presenting papers throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. Much to his surprise, he became an avid Western-style square dancer traveling to conventions from coast-to-coast. A U. S. Navy WWII Veteran, Bill was also a Past Master of Conrad Lodge #271 and a golf enthusiast.
He was a member of the First Immanuel United Church of Christ and former deacon.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruth (Hitchcock) Leyda, daughter Deborah and son-in-law John; twin granddaughters, Sarah and Rosie; his sister, Anna Belle Shephard; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Mauk and Maybelle Wilker.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Should you desire, memorials can be made to First Immanuel United Church of Christ or to the Salvation Army.
Arrangements are by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, Alliance, Ohio.
