William E. Mason, age 85, of La Mirada, CA, died at 1:10 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2008 at Mirada Hills Rehabilitation and Convalescence Hospital in California.
He was born, July 12, 1923, in Youngstown, Ohio to Earl and Elizabeth (Simons) Mason and moved from Alliance to California in 1963.
William worked for the railroad in Youngstown before moving to California. He then worked at Alpha Beta Market until his retirement more than 20 years ago.
He was a member of AARP and his hobbies included swimming, walking and reading, especially current events. He was also a Civil War enthusiast and an eight-year U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II.
William's survivors include his wife, Doris M. (Grimm) Mason, whom he married June 9, 1962; his daughter, Linda (Dugan) and son-in-law Robert Beckhart, Sr. of Ceres, CA; his three grandchildren, Christina Piersall, Robert Jr. and Charles Beckhart, all of Ceres, CA; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jason, Caleb, Tyler, William, Kathleen Beckhart, and Jenna and David Price.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kathy Beckhart; and brothers, Robert and Paul Mason.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Wallace officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will military honors will be held at Beechwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Beechwood United Methodist Church, 3450 Beechwood Ave. Alliance, Ohio 44601. Interment will be at Beechwood United Methodist Church Cemetery.
