William R. Zinz, Jr. age 80, of Deerfield, passed away Monday, June 1, 2015, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born June 5, 1934, in Youngstown, Ohio, to William R. Sr. and Sarah (Schuller) Zinz.
A 1952 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, William then received his Bachelor's Degree in 1956 and Master's Degree in 1963 at Kent State University. He then did additional graduate work at Kent State and Akron Universities.
William was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and as president several times. He went to St. Paul every Tuesday to work with the property committee since 1985. He was an Eagle Scout and also a member of the Sebring Masonic Lodge No. 626.
He received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Armor branch of R.O.T.C. at Kent State University, graduated from the basic and advanced courses in Armor at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and was commander of the HQ Company on the 7th Tank Battalion in Salem, Ohio, graduated from the Associate Executive Leadership Class at Ft. Lee, Virginia, National Security Management Course, Command and General Staff College and later taught classes in the Command and General Staff College in Indian Towne Gap, Pennsylvania and at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware from 1960 to 1964. William was promoted through the years and retired from the United States Army on June 5, 1994 as a Lt. Colonel.
William taught Industrial Arts at Sebring High School from 1956 to 1960, Stanton Jr. High from 1960 to 1961, and State Street Jr. High from 1961 to 1967, and was assistant principal at Stanton Jr. High from 1967 to 1970 and State St. Jr. High from 1970 to 1985. He then worked as an evening supervisor at the Alliance High School from 1991 to 1996.
Survivors include his brothers, Donald (Lucille) Zinz of Deerfield, and Ronald Zinz of Salem; sister-in-law, Rose Novad of Bessemer, Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews, Daniel (Bessie) Zinz of Suffield, Jacob (Jennifer) Zinz of Toledo, Jeff Novad of Baltimore, Valerie (Fred) Urda of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Christine (Craig) Austin of Mentor, Michael (Janet) Novad of Bessemer, Pennsylvania and Mark (Sherri) Novad of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania; and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bruna (Domini) Zinz, who died November 24, 2012; son, Captain Richard W. Zinz, who was killed in an auto accident while serving in Korea November, 1996; and a great-nephew, Joseph Urda.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Muse officiating.
